Note: If you have been with me since I started this page, then you know all about zabasearch.com, the site that got me doing this. If you have asked to be removed from that site, you probably have not been. Check out the link below saying Info On Zabasearch. There is a little info on that page with what we can try to do to get our names removed from that site.
Welcome To My Site!
Let me tell you a little about why I feel we need a site such as this. There are many sites out there where you can go and type in someone's name and get personal information such as addresses, phone numbers and date of birth. They also give you more information if you pay a fee. They call them "background checks". I don't really know what is on the background checks, but I know some of the sites I have found say they include such information as: current address, phone number, including unlisted numbers, real property ownership, aliases/maiden names, even your relatives names!
Now some of this information you can find right at your local government offices depending on where you live. But do you really want anyone you talk to on the internet to be able to find our how much real estate you own, or any hidden assets you have? There are many internet predators out there who use these web site's to obtain information to find their next victim. These people are very smart, slick and charming. Many otherwise intelligent people have been taken in and lost a lot of money and property because of these people. Yet, I have been told by a couple of people it is legal for them to be able to obtain this information. One Of the things I will be doing is doing research on the legalities of this.
Another reason, and perhaps a more important reason for this information to not be readily available, is there many abused women (and men) out there, who have either been abused by spouses, girlfriends, boyfriends, or anyone close to them, or who have been physically or sexually attacked, and who have done everything in their power to make sure their abusers/attackers could not find them. This is a very personal issue for me, since I was an emotionally, mentally, and physically abused wife, and was also mugged several years ago. If you have not gone through this situation, although I am sure you can imagine it, you have no way of actually knowing what the fear that goes along with it long after you get out of the situation feels like. I have had several women e-mail me, telling me that they had felt safe and secure knowing that their abusers had no way of finding them. They had done everything they could to cover their tracks. Then they find their addresses and phone numbers on the internet. People should be able to feel safe in their own homes, and this information being out there, does not help these victims, who had reclaimed their lives, do that.
The sites I am talking about here are the ones that have place your information there without your knowledge or permission. This is not about sites such as Reunions.com where people give the information that they want to give to be placed on the internet. These sites are doing a good service, because some people do want people to find them.
One of my goals with this site is to make people more knowledgeable, and hopefully give them some ideas on things they can do to fight these sites. I am sure we will never get rid of these sites, although I would love that, but we can make it harder for them. I have a couple of things down at the bottom for everyone to do if they choose. The first thing is a poll right below this. I will be changing the poll periodically, so check back to see if there is a new one. There is also a link for a guestbook. I have already e-mailed my senator's, as well as the local news stations and CNN. I will be e-mailing more media. Take a look at the "letter To The Media" link to see the letter I am sending. At the end, I hope there will be some changes, and I know i will be able to say I did all that I could.
